Cos'e Bluesign?

bluesign® is a certification system that provides environmental solutions for fashion industries and brands. The goal is to develop a strategic plan to make production more sustainable, on a small or large scale. On the basis of rigorous criteria, tools and services are studied to support companies on their path towards sustainable development.

bluesign® was born in 1997, in Switzerland, where a common effort was made to develop a textile product with the least possible environmental impact, offering greater safety to workers and consumers.

In order to make this project accessible to as many companies as possible, an independent company was born from Switzerland: Bluesign. The main objective is to motivate suppliers, manufacturers and fashion brands to reduce the environmental footprint of fabrics, with particular attention to the chemicals used.

As an independent body, bluesign® monitors the progress made by companies in this process, guarantees the continuous development of solutions by optimizing their criteria year by year.

Certification bluesign® guarantees a unique approach to minimize the environmental impact during the production process, a called approach Input Stream Management: the substances and raw materials applied are checked before being used in a production chain.

In practice, instead of testing the finished products, the system bluesign® is applied before production. This means that suppliers, manufacturers, retailers and fashion brands must undergo rigorous tests to verify compliance with Bluesign® criteria.

This innovative system reduces the environmental impact on the entire textile supply chainin fact, with its approach, theInput Stream Management provides an efficient solution for fabric manufacturers and fashion brands, first of all evaluating the chemicals used in the various processing phases.

Bluesign certification

The Blue Way of Bluesign represents the vision and mentality of responsible and sustainable production aimed at the textile sector. Bluesign is a complex certification system that provides more sustainable and safe environments for people, workers in the sector and end consumers.

We can therefore define a Bluesign certified fashion product as ecological, but also socially ethical.

As we know fashion and pollution are closely connected to each other and, driven by a holistic approach, Bluesign it traces a path along the entire production chain, making improvements in every single production phase:

  • Productivity of resources used
  • Consumer safety
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Water / energy consumption
  • Air emission control

Bluesign drastically reduces the environmental impact of fabrics. As a solution provider, Bluesign works as an independent inspector to ensure maximum trust and transparency. In keeping with this approach, Bluesign encourages the textile industry to step up its efforts in sustainable processes.

Immediate action is needed in the textile sector

Theenvironmental pollution caused by the textile industry is there for all to see. Water pollution, dirty air, contaminated soil - the weight ofenvironmental pollution, as a result of human action, has become increasingly clear.

Years before the named European Regulation came into force REACH, Bluesign laid the foundations for a more careful chemical management, writing the longest list of dangerous chemicals in the world: Restricted Substances List (RSL) - List of restricted substances - a list that regulates the use of more than 900 chemicals, and renders about 600 toxic substances unusable.

They have been identified and classified beyond 20.000 chemicals commonly used in the textile sector and with the introduction of RSL, hundreds of tons of dangerous chemicals "could" be replaced with safe alternatives, across the global production of textiles.

Thetextile innovationyear after year it tends to develop new, more environmentally friendly chemicals. So the alternatives exist, you just need to inquire and replace the old ones with the new ones. If so, the risks to people and the environment could be drastically reduced.

It's a pity that Bluesign is a voluntary certification, and not mandatory. As is the adhesion to the program Detox My Fashion, a campaign launched by GreenPeace to reduce the use of these toxic substances on the upper floors of fashion, involving the big brands and the big distribution chains of the Fast Fashion.

Bluesign Certification Requirements

According to the criteria dictated by Bluesign, textile companies and brands are required to act responsibly and sustainably towards people, the environment and the natural / energy resources to be used. The rules contain all the relevant information and ensure coherent transparency and traceability in all processing phases, starting clearly from the raw materials to be used.

Particular attention is paid to intermediate products, those created in-house or purchased from third parties, since only products tested by Bluesign can obtain the label Bluesign® APPROVED.

Each small accessory is the result of a complex production process, for this reason it is necessary to test raw materials and components such as dyes, or other auxiliary / support chemical materials. The Bluesign system also offers green solutions to the manufacturers of these components (external suppliers).

All components that pass the tests are marked as Bluesign® APPROVED, that's why there are no missing rings, neither among the materials, nor on the various production phases. Everything must be under control.

To apply the label with the Bluesign® logo at least 90% of fabric and 30% of accessories must be Bluesign® approved. We can therefore say that a product with a label bluesign® was created by a company committed to more sustainable production.

The goal remains to reach the 100% of Bluesign approved components, which would guarantee the maximum degree of safety for the final consumer.
